Higher education Costs Reduced Through Accredited Distance Learning degree Programs And Academic Scholarships

The University of California-Irvine, University of Southern California and University of Notre Dame are among the “Best Value” national universities in US News & World Report's “America's Best Colleges 2011.” That doesn't mean these colleges post the lowest tuition rates. The Best Colleges edition, which came out in August 2010, lists these institutions because of what students actually pay after scholarships and other forms of financial aid are taken into account.

Colleges, universities and technical schools have published tuition rates and net costs that are determined after factoring in scholarships, grants and other forms of financial aid. To figure out an institution's net cost, some organizations figure student loans into the equation. Others factor in tax deductions and credits. These net costs don't necessarily consider room and board, meal plans, travel costs or books.

In analyzing the scholarships and financial aid offerings at the country's top 1,800 colleges and universities, US News & World Report determined those where students might expect to pay less out of pocket than $20,000, according to the publication. The publication reports that it figured in tuition as well as room and board, meal plans, books and travel to come to these determinations. Families might have a particularly difficult time justifying assuming large college debts when times are tough economically and they're not certain about the future, an August article in Forbes magazine noted.

Scholarships are a common way for colleges, universities and technical schools to draw students. After finding quality institutions that might best fulfill their needs and goals, students are typically advised to figure in scholarships and other forms of financial aid and compare actual costs. To pay for college last year, families relied on more money from all sources, including scholarships and grants, according to a recent Fannie Mae report. Some lesser known institutions are actually offering scholarships to every student who is admitted, US News & World Report noted.

Colleges and universities aren't the only sources of scholarships. There are also large corporations, non-profit foundations, government agencies, civic and community groups and churches that offer scholarships that can often be applied to campus and distance learning programs. In these instances, scholarships can typically be applied to the institution of a student's choice, provided in many instances the institution is accredited by a nationally recognized agency.

Several new and expanded scholarship programs have been announced recently. One of the most far-reaching was in Arkansas, where the Arkansas News Bureau noted that a new state lottery helped more than 25,000 students qualify for what's known as Academic Challenge Scholarships. Without the lottery last year, 8,282 students qualified for these same scholarships, the Arkansas News Bureau reported.

Scholarships might be awarded based on academic or athletic performance, financial need, demographics, subject area of study and other factors. While many scholarships are intended to encourage studies in subjects such as science, engineering and nursing that can lead to in-demand careers, there are also scholarships for sculptures, dancers, auto technologists and more. A number of search engines on the web can help students find the college grants that's right for them. By combining scholarships, students might even be able to attend online college degree programs for free.
