Culinary Art School: A Day in the life

While every culinary art school has its own small differences which will impact the daily routine, here is a sneak peek into what the life of a typical fill-time cooking student is like. The day usually starts early, around 7:00. After getting in a quick breakfast, the next stop is class. First is kitchen management, where students learn the basics of managing a commercial kitchen. In this management class they learn things like how to do inventory, many financial planning and ordering materials. Next is food science, which teaches the hows and whys of culinary arts. How come certain foods react to other foods in a particular way? How can unique flavors be created by combining different ingredients?

After lunch (which a student may or may not have on campus) the real hands-on work in the kitchen begins. While the work is often challenging, most culinary students find this to be the most fun part of culinary art school. Class consists of about 15 students in a state-of-the-art facility. Each student has their own knife set, which is a required purchase before school begins. Students may learn cultural tried and true techniques like those used by French chiefs in classes like “Intermediate Classic French Cuisine. By enrolling in these hands-on classes, student get to step away from book learning and discover for themselves how flavors are enhanced or food has a certain taste when you combine ingredients. Instructors provide individualized attention to each student and do their best to make sure they understand why these techniques work the way they do, not just how they work. Students then head to a class like Sautéing Basics, to practice and understand this very popular culinary technique. Many will be surprised to find there is more to this technique than they previously thought.

After that, it’s time for dinner. Some students may have evening classes a few times a week, depending on their program. For others, it’s time to relax a bit, maybe by attending a school-sponsored presentation or by checking out the neighborhood, which is typically in a medium to large city with many activities to offer. Typically students have a 10-hour day of classes and then leisure activity Monday through Friday. One thing is certain - students never experience a dull moment at a culinary art school.
