History Labor Day

A Closer Look At Lanzarotes Volcanoes

It's said that everyone looks for something different in a holiday and although some may plan to stretch out on a beachfront, others are inclined to stretch out their brains and pursue hobbies and pastimes that are fascinating to them. And if you happen to be a keen volcanologist then the Canarian archipelago ought to have you searching for your passport, thats for sure. The recent spate of volcanic activity on the Canarian island of El Hierro may well encourage some volcanologists to visit this small outcrop. But for those who prefer less volatile conditions for their holidays, the island of Lanzarote, with over 300 dormant craters, may sound more appealing.

The latter´s pedigree as a volcanic island is well established, although there has been no noticeable seismic activity on Lanzarote for at least the last hundred years. It is however, the location of the longest recorded eruptions and the subsequent volcanic debris has been turned into its best tourist attraction. Lanzarote's Timanfaya National Park is composed of some of the most colourful craters and lava and forms an excellent panorama to view from the tour buses that run through the park. Visitors will also be amazed by the geothermal barbecue, which cooks all the food served at the El Diablo restaurant in the park.

Whilst most visitors to the island will always make a bee - line to the Timanfaya National Park, there's also a variety of additional volcanic visitors attractions on the island, which include a subterranean home fashioned from hollow lava bubbles, plus the green caves where you can listen to concerts occasionally in a near acoustically perfect volcanic chambers.

For those who want to explore the entire volcanic region, much the best method is to arrange Lanzarote car hire and spending a day touring through Timanfaya, the natural volcano park and the wine-growing area of La Geria. All of these distinct zones were created by seismic activity at different points in the island´s history.

The fact that vines and other crops can still be cultivated on the land is a testament to the resourcefulness of local farmers. In fact, several wines produced in the La Geria region have won prizes for the bodegas that cultivate them.

For those visitors who are based in one of the many Lanzarote hotels, you could take an excursion for the day and let someone else do the driving. With direct pick ups and drop offs to the door of the hotel, it couldn't be easier.

The attraction of Lanzarote is inescapable and lots of tourists visit time after time either to bask on the exquisite beaches, absorb the local culture at one of the islands many carnivals throughout the year, or simply just to unwind in the year round balmy climate.
