The Extended Record Driving The FHWA

When people picture construction workers, images of them in bright orange safety vests or neon safety green tshirt quickly comes to mind. The reason this is so common is because they are required to wear them under the order of the FHWA, or the Federal Highway Administration.

The Federal Highway Administration is a component of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Specifically, it covers most anything having to do with the highways: construction, design, and maintenance. This also includes those doing construction on the roads. Some pretty eye-opening statistics show just how dangerous working along a highway can be. More than 100 people die and 20,000 are injured every single year. To make this statistic drop, the FHWA put in place a rule that requires workers to put on high-visibility ANSI Class 2 or 3 safety vests. These vibrant lime t-shirt gives workers the simple benefit of visibility, which is often not so great on a highway.

Working near the highway is extremely is hazardous, so safety vests are an absolute must for workers. Other professionals whose jobs bring them close to traffic also must wear safety vests. For example, EMTs, policemen and women, and others have to wear the vests. For increased safety, there is a huge selection of tools available online, such as lighted traffic cones, reflective rain gear, and hard hats.

The FHWA has undergone a lengthy coming-of-age in order to become the administration we know today. It has a long history, and many of these changes are simply adaptions as highways started playing a more important role in the United States. The first incarnation of the FHWA was in 1893 with the office of Road Inquiry. Further down the road came the Office of Public Roads in 1905, which a branch of the Department of Agriculture. Ten years later in 1915, the name was changed to the Bureau of Public Roads. In 1939, it was renamed the Public Roads Administration, and it then reverted back to the Bureau of Public Roads in 1949. In 1966, it finally emerged as the Federal Highway Administration of today.

Covering topics including environmental concerns, making the most technologically advanced highways, and safety for those both constructing and using the roads, the FHWA is involved in more than just building roads. They are also currently working on various projects, including one for increasing safety at toll plazas for both the workers and the drivers. There is also a program for making roads as efficient as possible in order to reduce emissions. Yet another program focuses on congestion relief, that is, trying to make roads accessible for the growing population in the US. They also have programs for motorcycle safety, as well as for roads and bridges in Native American Reservations.

If you think about it, traveling is a huge part of American life. People traveling to get to work, to visit families, and to pick up groceries all require getting in a car and using the roads. The FHWA is the reason traveling across the United States is possible. Because safety is so important, the FHWA is always creating safety programs and regulations, such as the one requiring construction workers to wear the safety green tshirt or lime tshirt, so they remain visible, even in the worst weather conditions.
