News Websites Can Be An Amazing Location For Information About Topics You Never Realised You Were Interested In
It is fair to say that I spend a lot of time online and as a consequence I usually get most of my news updates through a handful of websites instead of television or newspapers. For me it’s a great way to find out what is going on across the planet, and because you can easily select explicitly which news stories you want to read and can avoid those that are of no interest, in my opinion it is a far more efficient way of keeping up with the day’s news.
That isn’t to say that I only look at a handful of news stories every day. In reality, by using websites including the BBC or The Telegraph, I actually see far more pages about subjects that I don’t know much about just because the headline for the piece indicates that it might be of interest. And so today, I’ve spent some time reading news items about Chernobyl, fallow deer, IQ scores and the use of Laser eye beam replacements for spark plugs.
The Chernobyl article was about the fact that the incident took place 25 years ago, and obviously, the discussion surrounding nuclear power has been big news again in recent weeks as a result of the earthquake and tsunami in japan which damaged the Fukushima power plant and the threat of radiation from the damaged reactors. I hadn’t realised how long it had been since the Chernobyl disaster – it seems like recent news in my head, instead of something which happened a quarter of a century ago.
The piece about fallow deer explains how dominant males allegedly interrupt fights between other males during the mating season, because it enhances their reputation and lets them effectively defeat two opponents at the same time. There has been a great deal of research carried out at a deer park in Ireland, and it does appear that these animals are really quite devious when it comes to impressing a mate.
The article regarding spark plugs explains that there is every likelihood that fairly soon, the spark plug which fires your car into life every day, could be replaced by a laser driven function which would be able to start the car much more effectively, without suffering the wear and tear that current spark plugs are prone to. The process is apparently to point two or three beams from the Laser eye into the engine, which would start the car. The precision needed is totally achievable (think of the delicate work the beam can manage on a human eye during Laser eye surgery) and the fact that it wouldn’t wear out is a definite bonus for motorists.
And then there was the news article regarding IQ tests, which in all honesty was a complete non-story from my perspective. A report in the US has stated that folk will generally get better results in an IQ test if they are motivated or have been given an incentive to achieve a particular level. I would have thought that would be fairly obvious, but it seems that it required a scientific study to prove it. Possibly the authors of the study had their own incentive in the form of some generous funding or a large pay cheque. Or possibly I’m just being cynical.
Nevertheless, just from spending a little time reading a news website, I now know more about the mating habits of fallow deer, have realised that it’s 25 years since the Chernobyl disaster and discovered that cars could soon be utilising similar technology to that employed in CD players, barcode scanners and Laser eye surgery procedures, even if I’m not totally sure about the newsworthiness of a few of the other stories.
Naturally, whilst I am busy writing about these news stories, there will be a lot more stories appearing online and once again, a lot will interest me enough to make me want to look at them, whilst some will turn out to hold no interest for me whatsoever. But the advantage of finding all of this information on the internet is that it is so straightforward to read each item – much more than rifling through pages of newsprint.
