Tv Shows Paranormal Activity

Old time Radio Shows Crime Does Not Pay

The radio show Crime Does Not Pay is a perfect example of how Old Time Radio often mirrored major studio productions. The radio show drew inspiration and its own plot lines from MGM's film series Crime Does Not Pay. It wasn't for another 14 years that the films were featured in the mainstream radio shows.

During the same general time period, a comic book by the same name was popular with readers. By the 1950s crime dramas kept the public interested, and the same can be said for dramas of today.

Crime Does Not Pay could be compared to another Old Time Radio show of the day, Gangbusters. They both featured criminals who were apprehended. Each episode ended with messages about how wrong it is to break the law.

Around 1950, WMGM broadcast the show in New York. In 1952, another year of shows followed on the Mutual network. Listeners could tune in every Monday to hear a half-hour show about crime.

Originally airing on Monday evenings, the show switched to Wednesday nights about halfway through its run. A lot of the episodes re-aired in repeats. The final year of the show was just pre-recorded shows and nothing more.

The show was transcribed and included sound effects that were loaded up in to a system ready to play, however many long-time fans of the show did not like this change. All in all, the show had some success, albeit very brief.

MGM movie stars from B-movies in fact became more famous as radio personalities. From time to time a major star would drop by and play a guest role for the series. Lionel Stander as well as other actors guest starred.

One of the things that sets Crime Does Not Pay apart from some other series is that it specifically sought to teach a message. Various crimes such as murder were obviously focused on, but the show did ensure that doing such activities is wrong and won't go unnoticed.

Often the crimes reflected real stories ripped from the headlines. A good example was the Lindbergh baby murder case, referenced in the episode "Body of the Crime". As the series frequently referenced reality it made the show all the more enthralling.

The main difference with this show of course is that the bad guy always ended up locked up. After all, crime does not pay!
