To Realize Their education Dreams Prospective Students Will Be Thrilled To Learn How Federal Grants Help Financially
A group of 25 Badin, Ohio, high school students recently earned six figure scholarships. Referred to by the Journal News in Dayton as members of the “100,000 Scholarship Club,” the seniors in this mid-western community were honored in May for being awarded $100,000 and more in scholarships. They happen to be in good company.
Shayla Price of Thibodaux, La., also received more than $100,000 in scholarships. Searching the Internet and filling out applications, she succeeded with 80 percent of those she applied for, earning monies in the amounts of $100 to $40,000, according to an article in the Black Collegiate. In Pacolete, S.C., high school senior Matthew Lee in May was named one of 10 finalists in a Proton Energy Scholarship competition that earned him a $100,000 scholarship, an article on the website SC Now noted. Proton Energy is a global hydrogen energy company owned by entrepreneur and Lumber Liquidators Founder Tom Sullivan. Lee and his fellow finalists were recognized for their achievements and promise in technology and science and for wanting to move on to studies in these areas. Additional high paying scholarships include:
Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology: High school students participate individually and in teams in this research project competition for a chance at winning up to $100,000 scholarships. The Siemens Foundation each year proffers more than $7 million to support engineering, technology, science and math education initiatives. It's administered by the College Board, with regional winners moving on to finals at the national level.
Distinguished Young Women (formerly America's Junior Miss): Women can vie for cash and college-granted scholarships in this national pageant in which nearly 200 colleges and universities participate. Idaho's Madison Leonard, in claiming the first Distinguished Young Woman of America title in June 2010, earned $40,000 in scholarship money that she plans to use to pursue a degree in journalism. Leonard won state and local program prizes of $9,100 – plus an additional $41,000 in cash and scholarships by claiming a preliminary talent competition.
Jack Kent Cook Foundation: The Jack Kent Cook Foundation offers educational programs for students as early as middle school and provides scholarships at the undergraduate and graduate level. Undergraduates and transfer students at two-year institutions in 2010 competed in financial needs-based scholarship programs that provide up to $30,000 a year, while graduate students vied for up to $50,000 as part of a separate scholarship initiative. Philanthropist Jack Kent Cook, who had to forego an athletic scholarship himself after helping to support his family during the Great depression, went on to become a media mogul, sports team owner and owner of New York City's Chrysler building. The foundation was established in 2000, after he died and was included it in his will.
Ronald McDonald House Charities: Scholarships from the golden arched restaurant chain are nothing to clown around about. As part of its Hispanic American Commitment to Education Resources Scholarship Program, Ronald McDonald House Charities in 2008 went nationwide, awarding four high school students throughout the country $25,000 a year for four years of college, university and technical school studies. Scholarship recipients hailed from New York, New Jersey, California and Florida and planned to major in chemical engineering, biochemistry, neurobiology and economics and math. They were selected based on academic achievement, financial need and community service. Ronald McDonald House Charities also offers programs for high school seniors in general and for students of Asian-Pacific and African-American heritage. Through these programs, participating local chapters in areas where applicants reside provide $1,000 minimum scholarships.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation: Through this federal memorial to the late U.S. President, full-time students in four-year colleges can receive $30,000 toward graduate or professional school studies that can lead careers in government and other areas of public service. Truman scholars, who must be nominated by a faculty representative at the institution where they're studying, are also provided opportunities to participate in leadership development activities and gain federal government internships and employment. Past scholarship recipients have majored in a variety of subjects, from economics and engineering to environmental science.
A quick route to six-figure scholarships might not always happen, no matter if they are to be applied to on-campus or online degree programs. Students should apply for as many scholarships as they fit the eligibility criteria, including those in the $100 range that might be less competitive, experts say. Applying for scholarships as early as possible is important as well, according to experts. Different college grants have different deadlines, and missing those deadlines can put students out of the running.
